News is depressing

One of those days when I feel that I know why we never find evidence of intelligent life in the universe.  Intelligent life evolves to consider short term gains.  After all, we live in the short term.  Eventually, they all must drown in their own waste or they crash their society.

The Boehner story is there only because he seems to think that we can only grow jobs by cutting regulation on companies.  He applauded the EPA drawback.

Bitter ripples

There is a moment in LOST when Charles Widmore and Ben and the Man in Black are facing off.  Charles's men killed Ben's daughter but is now on the side of the angels in the story.  The MiB says to Ben (in effect) help me and I will kill Charles' daughter, Penny.  Supposedly, the entire world will coming crashing down if the MiB escapes the island.  Ben has spent his life fighting the MiB.  However, he turns and shoots Charles.  "He doesn't get to save his daughter," Ben says.

Shall I do the same as a Louisiana native?  Say Drill, baby, Drill to every coast?  If they let Louisiana die, do they deserve to save their daughter?

Down to the River

On Thursday, July 24th, the headline was “Oil Spill Shuts Down 80 Miles of River”.  I wasn’t able to make it down to the river that week, and I went on vacation during the first week of August.  I went down to the river today to watch the cleansing process.  According to the paper, they have emptied the barge and they are raising it from the riverbed.

Oil behind booms

It is a sobering thing to watch.  What happened to those oil-eating microbes that science magazines promised us?  What I saw today looked like boats with dust mops.  The technology to separate oil from water does not appear to have changed at all.
