Sliced eggplant painted with a mixture of olive oil and minced garlic.  Shoved under the broiler for the correct number of minutes (I have to work on that.  Some came out very toasty).  During the last few minutes under the broiler, top with mozzarella cheese.  Allow the cheese to melt.  Warm a pita bread pocket and stuff it with these bronzed circles of eggplant.  Perfect!  I can see why one cookbook says that eggplant was saved for Shabbat dinner.

For dessert,
something simple:
pomegranate, a fruit too messy to eat in public.
Slice.
Quarter with a knife.
As this ovary bleeds over your fingers
leave civilization behind.
Greedily tear the cream honeycomb sections
with your teeth.
With your fingers
discover rubies.
Masticate.
Chew.
Spit and repeat.
