(no subject)
Jun. 7th, 2009 11:46 pmThe Sci Fi channel is playing one of their abysmal movies: tonight it is “The Fallen Ones” which appears to be about an archeologist finding one of the fallen angels or maybe just one of their kin.
It makes me wonder if Israelis make any horror or fantasy movies. All of the movies that I’ve rented have been family dramas, or centered about the Palestinian/Israeli conflict. There was an extremely silly one that was like an Israeli Cheech and Chong movie pretending to be a mystical flick. I haven’t seen any science fiction, fantasy movies or any movies that honestly use Jewish folk tales. This one has a lamentable scene where a Rabbi meets the angel of Death and discusses the book of Revelations—which the Rabbi has to admit is not his subject. And why is the angel of Death a fallen angel?
“Night Watch” was interesting because I had the feeling that I was seeing Russian folk tales with a Western veneer. The archetypes were unexpected. Japanese anime gives me the same feeling. The engine under the hood is different than the Zeus/Jupiter or Christian God that is implicit in western films. I wonder what a truly Jewish fantasy would look like. A little western, a little eastern, and a little African I expect.
