Jun. 24th, 2009 05:12 pmI walked to lunch yesterday in the New Orleans heat (98 degrees with a heat index of 107). Dead leaves rattled and followed me in the breeze making me think that I was followed.
The rattle of dead leaves is common in New Orleans—not because of the heat, but because of the live oak trees. Despite their name, one could call the trees “dead oak trees” because they are always pushing off old growth. The sidewalks are filled with curled brown skeletons.
Then you look up and see the verdant glimmer of new leaves.
